Data visualisation is a powerful tool, yet poorly designed charts frequently mislead or fail to communicate key insights, leading to flawed decision-making. This workshop presentation, Chart with Purpose, addresses this critical challenge by providing practical, actionable examples and strategies for effective data storytelling. It will be a whirlwind ride with examples of good and bad and have interactive elements and opinionated opinions.
Simon is a Senior Analytical Manager with the NHSE South West Intelligence and Insights Team. Prior to that he worked for a mental health provider for 7 years and has worked in management information for the police and child protection for around 5 years. His previous work roles have been DVLA prosecutor, legal cashier, costume designer, and professional goblin (yes I was paid to goblin).
Simon has a MSc in Healthcare Data Science and very keen in seeing how to embed robust statistics and modern data science into more day-to-day analytics, he firmly believes we should be bringing these together into the operational day job to support data driven decisions. He has a keen interest in building analytical questions, visualisation and data story telling techniques to support advanced analytics. Simon is also an NHS Open Analytics community fellow, SPC champion and deputy director of regions for APHA. In his spare time he is a massive nerd and love to play dungeons and dragons and enjoy running (very slowly).
